City of Munising, one of the steamers belonging to Michigan State's Auto Ferry service, linen postcardThe state of Michigan initiated an auto ferry service in 1923 to connected the upper and lower peninsulas of the state between Mackinaw City and St Ignace. The service ran 34 years until 1957 when as part of the state law establishing the building and opening of the Mackinac bridge crossing the Mackinac Straits, the ferry service was discontinued to remove competition between the ferries and the bridge. Some 12 million vehicles and more than 30 million passengers were ferried across the Straits of Mackinac during the Michigan State Auto Ferry years of service. "Fritzel's restaurant on the corner of State and Lake Streets was Chicago's equivalent to the Brown Derby in L.A. -- a restaurant patronized by stars of stage and screen." Chicago Tribune, July 26, 2004
Between 1947 and 1972 the restaurant served the elite of Chicago, Hollywood, and New York with exquisite food from a 100 item menu, prepared in a spotless kitchen, and offered with gracious service. Caption on reverse reads in part - visit Ontra Cafeterias while in Los Angeles and "you will KNOW the reason for their nationwide popularity".

Cleveland Motor Court, Cleveland, Tennessee linen postcardBig Bear Lake Large Letter Linen PostcardProduced in the linen era of postcards, circa 1935 to early 1960s, large letter linen cards have a strong following among collectors and local history buffs.
Their influence lives on in the many derivative products that abound in the form of posters, decorative wall hangings in restaurants and so on today that encapsulate the large letter style. This example celebrating the outdoor western life to be found at Big Bear Lake, California, published by Curt Teich & Co, is typical of the stylish lettering, multiple images, and vivid colors of the genre. White's Motel Court Gettysburg Pennsylvania 1954 linen postcard Postmarked 1954, the sender of this card records that it rained all the way from Carlisle PA to Gettysburg but that "it ain't ruining our spirit". She reports "I already love married life & wish it so much for you Julia. It's wonderful!!!" No report on the tour of the Gettysburg national site.
Skyline Parkway Motor Court Motel Waynesboro Viriginia linen postcard Located on the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains - offering "cool, comfortable, modern cottages ... each with an unsurpassed view of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The full parking lot suggests it was a popular place to stay. Perhaps it was the Howard Johnson restaurant and the Gulf Service station adjacent to the motel that sealed the deal.
